In: The Educator CEL For Teachers Training and research journal> knowledge of the child in January 1968 You complain of lack of appetite of your students, weakness of memory you tired by excessive exercise, conducted in fault conditions. I am aware that the issue concerns educators who realized that only want to force the memory as a vessel is filled causes fatigue which is the defense reaction of the battered body, and that this fatigue disappears when the child is interested in what is presented to him in a form that meets their deepest needs.

But the school hardly makes “this evidence; or rather she concedes the point. Because, despite this lack of appetite, despite the fatigue, the children of our century certainly know a lot more things that children there are a hundred or two hundred years, it is concluded that the school still developed memory and she has reason not to turn its back on techniques that have been proven.

Now, I wonder myself, if memory is really a faculty that is likely to develop and improve, at least by the usual direct means. The memory is as an individual ability is a function virtually predetermined by physiological and mental conditions that we carry. If these conditions are unfavorable, if they bet the harmonious functioning of the body, there is almost always decline in memory.

Conversely, therefore, a strong health, lifestyles and work developing in the direction of human development, facilitate the docile and faithful memory functioning. We can improve and enhance this memory, influencing, the outside and inside, the lifestyle on health, on the core functions of the individual, on the logic of its relationship with the environment.

But take a given individual and worry about running his memory in the hope of enriching and perfecting, is in my opinion a dangerous illusion. It is as if we said that a trail is improving more au¬tant it more assiduously frequented. And this is true of all: it widens the passage, stones depart one by one, the herb itself is pushed to the edges.

But from a certain point, if too many feet pounding, if heavy beasts venture there, the edges crumble, holes are widening and strength will provide for the construction of walls or solid fill, the ‘metalling shifting passages, deep consolidation of the battered road. Illusion, I say.

What you can develop – and doubtless comes the mistake – it is a certain mental mechanism, a more or less technical mnemonic; it is more rational use and further signs of cor¬respondance or reminder, they are nodes tissue, notched sticks, primitive characters or writing more advanced formulas and more modern compli¬quees that materialize for so to speak and set certain stages of memory. This is a way as any to address the shortcomings of memory, to help his laborious operation.

It is therefore rather an indirect strengthening of memory that could lead to laziness and atrophy of a function that is slowly discharge on the formal support that you have given him. What undoubtedly develops memory, allowing at least to squeeze in with order and security more facts and concepts, it is this increasing precision that men are trying to bring in their design of universe, the cause and effect they discover the logic with which they reap the elements of knowledge, but we are far, you see, the common school exercise of memory, catechisms, or summaries to learn by heart without understanding them, lists of words or concepts to grasp in¬gurgiter without being neither deep nor reach their relationships – which makes them deliciously also sometimes interchangeable.

You have to do in this area, is not it? To take first aware of your weaknesses and your inconsistencies to finally get rid of practices that are maintained only by empiricism and convenience.
